Ann Rule was an exceptional writer who I just know was born to write this book, and others like it. She gives a chilling account of what it was like to have actually known Ted Bundy, to have worked alongside him, and then to have gone through the absolutely harrowing ordeal of discovering he was one of the most prolific serial killers of all time. I felt like I was living right alongside her. A very compelling book, with fascinating details and great honesty. A must read for crime buffs and students of human nature. EXCELLENT!!!
Heard about the book from the My Favorite Murder podcast and absolutely loved it. When it got to the Miami Court proceedings, I put the book down for a while because it didn't grab me as much, but it's hard to instill life into court proceedings. Knowing Ted Bundy personally obviously had a lifelong impact on the author and it makes you wonder how you'd react in her shoes as I think a lot of us true crime fanatics already think about. Definitely check out if you're into true crime or interested in a less sensationalist perspective of Ted Bundy than what is often shown.
Ann Rule takes us on a thrilling journey of the life and death of serial killer Ted Bundy. Being friends with a serial killer isn't the easiest thing in the world. But Ann didn't find that out until much later...Oh, Ted Bundy... what can I possibly say about this American icon that hasn't already been said in this book? I had several problems with this book but it had absolutely nothing to do with the author. Problems such as the diagnosis that they gave Ted Bundy which I felt was completely bogus and only used so that he could not use the insanity plea in his trials.I feel very conflicted however about the relationship between Ann and Ted. She doesn't explain until "The Last Chapter" that she held hopes for him to still help the world in the way that she first knew him to help people. She explains how she doesn't understand and cannot comprehend how someone can hurt an innocent victim and not feel remorse for it. Perhaps this is why she continued to send him money even in prison and why she continued to correspond with him even after his conviction. She wanted to use him to do good in the only way that she knew how. Whereas in the beginning I believe she was simply in denial that someone she called her friend could possibly be such a monster. As for Ted Bundy himself oh, I feel that he ultimately got what he wanted. Control. He was able to convince everyone that he was "the baddest son of a bitch around" and that he was the most monstrous of serial killers. By manipulating the public the way that he did he was able to victimize people that he hadn't even touched yet. When we as a populist think of Ted Bundy we think of fear. That is his legacy. and in my opinion the legacy that he wanted for himself. But anyways enough about my thoughts on the book. Let's talk about the nitty-gritty. The book was masterfully written as with most of Ann Rule's works. Her profession has allowed her to write these true crime novels in such a way that the layman can understand and follow but she still uses the police and detective crime jargon. She makes it easy for her readers to follow along and even makes her books exciting by turning the facts and evidence into a storyline. She is without doubt America's number one true crime novelist.I enjoyed this book immensely. although I already knew a lot about Ted Bundy there is still so much in this book that I did not know and was eager to learn. My self-studies in the field of psychology made this book more than fascinating for me. I don't think we realized when Ted was convicted how rare a jewel he actually was. And when I say that here's what I mean: it is so positively rare that we get a serial killer the likes of Ted Bundy. It is even rarer to get a serial killer the likes of Ted Bundy caught alive and held in captivity where we could possibly study him and learn from him. I truly wish we would have kept him alive and not giving him the death penalty. I understand that this statement may piss a few people off but it is my personal opinion.I could honestly go on and on about this book but I will refrain from doing so. LOL 😜 Please read this book if you have not already. I think this is one of those books that everyone should read no matter who you are, no matter where you come from. Ted Bundy is a study and not only American history but human history itself. Because you never know when you might meet a Ted Bundy yourself.
This book was well written. Ted manipulated the Police, the Courts, the women in his life, and Ann Rule herself. Society really needs to educate themselves on the signs of a person that is dangerous. It not the big burning bush you need to be aware of all the time...its the list of smaller and/or covert things put together that creates this type of monster. They walk among us in society everyday. Great Book
Anyone who likes true crime stories will enjoy reading this book. This was my first Ann Rule book. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down. Ann writes in such a way that draws the reader in and holds their interest. You feel that you are sitting with a friend while she explains people and situations in a way that puts you at the scene. Ann is a great author. I am glad to find she has written several other books and look forward to reading them all.
Great book, but definitely have something "feelgood" close by after you read this!Ann Rule walks you through these crimes in an "and you were there" sort of way. She was there for part of it. In a bizarre twist of circumstance, she actually knew Ted Bundy as a co-worker when they sat side by side, taking calls at a crisis hotline. This book is partially an examination of the author's own feelings about how someone she grew to be fairly good friends with, someone she came to believe was a caring, sensitive, intelligent individual with a world of potential before him, could act with such cold, calculating cruelty. One of the court appointed psychiatrists that examines Bundy pinpoints the problem, diagnosing him as having antisocial disorder, which used to be known as being psychopathic. According to this expert, people with this disorder are masters at hiding the problem in their day to day lives, making it hard to catch, and impossible to cure. Many more things are revealed in this book, and if you have the kind of morbid curiosity that I have, you'll find this book well worth your time.
This book is a HUGE disappointment.I was expecting so much and it turned out so pathetic. The theories from Rule to explain how Bundy became a serial killer are not even worth laughter. They sho a complete lack of understanding for character psychology. My impression is that she only hit a best seller with this because of the fact that she knew Ted personally. It is an amazing fact. It was what made me read the book, but her use of it was unbelievably poor.
