How she could have fallen in love with a Masai is almost beyond belief. Plus she actually lived in a Masai hut and stayed for 4 years. Absolutely amazing. One day in a Masai hut and I would run away. When I was in Africa and spent a day at a Masai village I could not understand how they continue to live in their huts. I went inside a hut and the fire was going in the middle of the hut. I could not wait to leave cause the smoke was making my eyes tear and I felt Asthmatic. We went inside a small school for the children and all of them were coughing and had runny noses. They didn't sound healthy.I have heard that when the children go away to school, nine out of 10 do not return home. The book was a good read. I recommend it to anyone who has traveled to Africa and met the Masai people. They want to keep their culture alive and I commend them for it.
Admittedly, I have not finished this book yet, but I am half way through this true story. It is fast paced, exciting and a pretty amazing story of a Swiss woman who travels to Masai country in Africa with her finance and a whirlwind romance ensues, not with her finance but with a chance meeting of an enormously handsome Masai warrior. This book is full of twists and turns, as Corrine has adventure after adventure, with triumphs and mishaps and you won't be able to put it down. I can't wait to get to the end...and then read the other two in the series! It is a true testament to love at first sight and the human spirit to prevail and triumph over what seems the impossible.
Okay, okay. So there may have been some complaints on my end about some of her knowledge and thoughts of Africa and some of the main character/author's actions, but I found the book wonderful overall. I've been to Africa (Tanzania specifically) three times and it was such a joy to be able to immerse myself back into the culture of that area. I've interacted with many Masai, though not Samburu, and it was nice to hear her experiences. I look forward to the next additions to the series. My suggestion is, read the book before you judge it too harshly based on these Amazon reviews. It is interesting despite its faults.
I found this book astonishing. I wanted to yell at Corrine at her lust for Lketinga, but then I realized I too was a young woman infatuated with young men who were not in my league or just plain inappropriate. Clearly Corinne is bright and a risk taker. She has the strength most of us dream of having. Disagreed with her choices, but absolutely fascinated by her life in Africa. It is an excellent book about love, living in the bush, making choices and making changes.
At the time the author fell in love, the Masai were almost completely free of Western influence. No Nike tee shirts. No rock and roll. No skate boards. Only missionaries nearby who could just about keep them from starving but not from going hungry. And these indigenous people had some awareness that, two days journey away, they could dance for tourists and sell them trinkets. So the man she sees on a Mombasa ferry one day very much represents raw, beautiful, animal masculinity and it completely overwhelms her. And that overwhelm persists against everything from confrontations with wild animals and life-threatening diseases to numbing bureaucracy and her lover's apparently total inability to feel anything toward her but suspicion and annoyance.I promise you, you'll be envious that any woman can be so oblivious to the universe's persistent attempts to discourage her. Her sense of romantic adventure is remarkable.
This is a true autobiography of a Swiss, German speaking twenty something tourist in the late 1980's in Kenya, falling in love at first sight with a young Massai. She pursues this obsession to the point of moving to live in his mother's tiny hut and eventually marrying him and bearing him a daughter.Even though married, they never could completely converse. The only somewhat common language would be English which neither could speak very well. She spoke no Swahili and he spoke no German. They were extremely mismatched, but it seemed to work for a few years. Her descriptions paint a vivid painting of Massai life and the society of both rural and metropolitan Kenya.
Very interesting and I learned a great deal. However, the beginning of the book was all over the place going from one location to another - most confusing! Once she was settled into life with the Masai, it was interesting and hard to believe this is a true story.
Having observed Masai Tribes in Tanzania several times during the last 22 years, I find the people, their nomadic lifestyle and their customs intriguing. The Masai, as a tribe, are generally very attractive people who live in one-room, cow-dung huts with straw roofs . They are on continuous searches for water for their honored cattle, firewood for outdoor cooking and thornbush to protect their encampments, cows and goats from predators. The warriors have many wives and children. If interested at all in the Masai, you will enjoy the details of this read. This non-fiction book left me stunned. What was she thinking? I am still unsure.
