About the Author
Investigative journalists Sandra Neil Wallace and Rich Wallace are award-winning novelists and nonfiction authors of books like Blood Brother: Jonathan Daniels and His Sacrifice for Civil Rights and Bound by Ice: A True North Pole Survival Story. Sandra is a former news anchor and ESPN sportscaster. The daughter of a refugee, she became a US citizen in 2016. Rich was a longtime senior editor at Highlights magazine. Both Sandra and Rich are members of the advisory council for the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College and are founding members of the Keene Immigrant and Refugee Partnership. They live in New Hampshire.Agata Nowicka is an illustrator and a comics artist. She spent her childhood drawing on everything with everything, including her mother's red lipstick on the staircase walls. She became an illustrator because she never wanted to stop drawing. Agata immigrated to the United States from Warsaw, Poland and now lives in New York City.

This is an extraordinary book about the life and achievements of first generation immigrants who have enriched the United States of America and the whole world. The book is well illustrated and wonderfully narrated. The biographies include diplomat, musician, scientist, athlete, cook, writer, and entrepreneur, to name a few. The breadth and diversity in the book is really an eye-opener even for open-minded pro-immigration people and breaks the stereotypical image of immigrants that we are often subjected to in the media. I recommend this book for people of all ages and for those whose ancestors came many centuries ago. For the newcomers, like myself, and my kids, the book presents the opportunities and careers that are available to us. My daughter who is in high school enjoyed the book very much and felt inspired by it. For people of long ancestry in the United States, this book will appeal in a very different way, I believe. The book will take us back in time when our ancestors came and had to find their way to success and be a contributing citizen. This book could be a wonderful gift item for any first generation kid and should be part of all libraries to remind the next generation how immigrants contributed to make the United States and the world a more colorful and better place.

From sports to science to the Secretary of State, there are short stories letting you know where the individual came from and their journey to the United States. We all have family that were at one time or another immigrants or refugees, it’s important to hear everyone’s story. This book allows you to open your mind and heart to 36 outstanding men and women who’ve persevered through the most difficult times and have risen above it all to be the best!
The Wallaces have done an amazing job in creating this wonderful book - very timely, and very important. I'm sure they had many more examples that were viable for this revelation, but the 36 they chose are spectacular.
I really like this book. It isn't terribly confrontational when it comes to America-first nonsense, simply stating matter-of-factly that immigrants represent a great American strength. I only detected one mention of you-know-who, in a profile of a journalist. So it isn't a polemic. I think this is the right tonal choice, because eventually we will move beyond this moment in our history, while the stories in this book will remain vital and interesting.The individual profiles are well-written, and the illustrations are excellent in quality - done in a line drawn comic book style. The book is organized alphabetically by last name. I personally would have preferred a chronological organization, since I think it would lend itself to telling the story of the United States of America a bit better. I also have additional quibbles of an organizational nature. The profiles do not have an "occupation" anywhere, whether in the table of contents or at the top of each profile. I think giving an occupation would be very beneficial for browsing, and for piquing adolescent interest. This is where a star came off from me - as I was reading, I constantly found myself scanning each profile for a "topic" of sorts.I would say the writing style and topic choices are aimed at the 8-12 set, though they are perfectly interesting for an adult reader as well. My 6 year old son, who is a precocious reader, read several profiles with interest and did not indicate any especial difficulty with comprehension on his part.I love that this book does not have a dust jacket. I loathe dust jackets, especially on kids' book sized material. The art is printed directly on the cover.Overall I think this is an excellent buy that just flubs a few organizational details.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a libertarian: I believe that all people must be equal in the eyes of the law, that an individual's religion and sexual orientation/preferences are nobody else's business so long as they are not hurting anybody else. Certainly I believe in equal rights for women, and for all races.But this book is like a multi-page propaganda poster for the Democratic Party's version of Utopia. It just comes on too strong with page after page of rose-colored simplified images of all these Muslims and transgender folks, all just aching to live together in peace and harmony. Well maybe these are all fine people, each and every one of them, but something about this collection just has a certain flavor to it that turns me off. Maybe I just don't like being force-fed an agenda to this degree.
