The explanations are adequate, but this book heavily relies on following charts, and charts in Kindle version (I assume book too) are extremely strenuous to follow. They look like scanned diagrams of prints from 20 years ago and are placed very unnaturally, you have to always turn the page to go to a corresponding diagram even if you are viewing two pages at a time. The information is there, it's just a chore to look at. I ended up googling every single chapter for better diagrams and charts. I must say, the table of content is a decent guide for which topics to google though.

The author is a little repetitive, but he does a great job of walking you through the basics of charting patterns with interesting anecdotes of its historical concept. I'm liking the material very much. However, the book itself is horrible. It smells...really bad. It's like it was dipped in formaldehyde before being shipped. I wear a mask to cover my nose when I read it to keep from triggering asthma. The cover must be made of cardboard or something weaker. If you store it upright it will sag and deform. The paper feels like it might be rice paper or something. Don't ever spill anything on this because it will probably melt. Plus the ink runs just from using a sticky tab as a book mark. I have never encountered any of these problems with any book in my life. Honest to God if there was a better quality copy I'd pay more for it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, and years later I still employ things I've learned from it when trading stocks or FX.

I have the hard cover first edition so I decided to get the hard cover 2nd edition and although the content of this book seems legitimate, the quality of the book seems suspicious as though it’s a counterfeit. It was bought “new” from prime but the cardboard cover is very thin and flimsy and the paper glued to it is ragged and becoming unglued. Not sure if the publisher for the 2nd edition just decided to be cheaper but the quality is no where near as good as the first edition.

As so many other readers have discovered after reading a cheaper book about candlesticks because they do not want to pay the higher price for this one, I learned I should have bought this one first. Having been a successful trader for over 13 years and read over 250 other books on trading I decided it was time to sharpen my candlestick skills so they could be integrated into my trend trading more fully as signals. I was not disappointed, Steve Nison was not only the pioneer who brought candlestick charts to America through his research into their use in Japan but he also wrote the best book on the subject, this one! The book is big and has clear charts showing and explaining how to read each type of candlestick formation. It is also a book about technical analysis and how to merge Japanese candles sticks with Western technical analysis for more accurate chart reading. I think all traders need to read this book just to have a working knowledge of candlesticks. I have always preferred to use them on my charts for the visual power they bring to reading a chart. I highly recommend.

Everyone knows my love for investing in real estate and the financial markets. I love reading finance books on trading, and this book is great. This book, when mixed in with other basic analysis, has improved my trading results.

I've read Bigalow's "Profitable Candlestick Trading" and Bulkowski's "Encyclopedia of Candlesticks" so I am able to compare the books. Steve's book is much better that these two books. Actually, you only need one book to learn the candles. It is hard to know how much knowledge an author really have when it comes to actual trading. The really successful traders tend not to write at all. This is an issue with all three books. In any case, I get the strong impression that Steve has deeper knowledge than Bigalow. So that should make the choice between the two easy. The book by Bulkowski is not an introduction so I won't comment further on that book. If you want to know more read my review.(One thing I've always wondered is where the Japanese authors are. If this method is so established in Japan we should have seen several direct translations of Japanese books. This is something for all the American writers to really explain.)I have written several short reviews on trading books. The best way is to compare the score on the books I've read. Many reviews on amazon.com are just glorious 5 star reviews. I use all five categories; sorry but everything isn't "great". Books rated 5 are very good. Books rated 4 are good solid books well worth reading. Books rated 3 can be bought by some people who read a lot or have very specific needs. Books rated 1 or 2 I would not recommend buying or reading. Naturally all in my humble opinion.

If you are into technical analysis (I use it to time trades) Candlestick Charting is clearer to me than other formats. Steve Nison explains the meaning of various patterns well. I used it to get out of TSLA in time before Nov downturn. This book should be read quickly once and then slowly once again. I continue to use it often as a reference. Not an easy read.
