I like to think I know a bit about standup comedy and comedians. I'm too young to have heard Jack Benny on the radio and only have seen the TV show in reruns. However, I'd learned about Jack through many other sources. The material in this book (which concentrates on the radio show) delves into every facet of it: the advertisers, race issues, the writing, the casting, the broadcasters/negotiations...oh MY).. It's really terrific. I'm not even finished with the book, but it's already proven itself as an amazing resource about Jack's radio show. I recommend it highly.
A great read with fascinating information connecting Jack's career with the popular culture environment throughout his long career and the ways in which he impacted it. This connects many dots for devoted fans and gives a great overview for neophytes.
Any book-length treatment of the Jack Benny Program is welcome and worth a look. There is much detail here about the Program's history and the careers of Benny and his cast, but know that this is a very academic treatment. It often reads like a PhD thesis. The result is an interesting book, but missing is the sense of fun that made--and still makes--the Jack Benny Program so enjoyable.
This isn't really a biography (lots of other places you can get that) but an excellent in-depth examination of a few important topics in the life and career of Jack Benny. There's a chapter on Mary Livingston, two on Eddie Anderson and other chapters on Benny's relationships with his writers and his sponsors. Hopefully this book will do well and Ms. Seeley can write another book with chapters dealing with Phil Harris, Dennis Day and the multiple other topics that can mined from Benny's career. I bought this book after hearing about it on Buck Benny's podcast and I'm glad I did.
This is a wonderfully well written and insightful account about who Jack was. An absolute delight to read.
While there is info on JB, most of the information is on social views and the authors opinions. I didn't care for it for those reasons.
My husband is a big Jack Benny Fan and really enjoyed this book. It provided details about Jack Benny he did not know yet.
Can't go wrong with extra inside information about Jack Benny! Wonderful addition to any library of his biographical/business background.
