It pains me to say so, but I think you need to hold this kind of book in your hands and not on a computer or Kindle. You need to be able to go back to page 10 or quickly look in the Index to see if he covers a certain problem....stuff like that. And full color pictures need to be examined in detail (over and over) and it is hard to do that on the Kindle. Otherwise, it was a great book and I will be applying stuff I read about into my own garden come Spring.
Gave this book 5 stars. This book is a must read for anyone interested in gardening. Includes how to start a garden, how to plan your garden, and includes how to choose plants or seeds that will perform in different soils, amount of sunshine and different watering needs
Great book with lots of information. I am enjoying reading all of the greens books. Very helpful and informative data.
I really enjoyed this book. I bought my first house in a very challenging garden area. I live in the mountains of Southern California. It is hot and dry In the summer and cold and windy (with a little snow) in the winter so it is a challenge to design a garden here. Oh yes - water is at a premium and my water comes from a water tower near my property so I have one tenth the water pressure of my flatland friends - very challenging indeed!!
I am a rank beginner in gardening and the information in this book provided an excellent "jumping off" place. After finishing this book I sought other books to increase my knowledge on the subject.
I really enjoyed this book. As a novice gardener I needed a book that was practical and full of useful hints and tips. Douglas's writing style is intimate and feels like he is standing with you in your garden giving you sage advice! I have been trying to garden less with annuals and more with perennials and this was a wonderful book to guide you from the soil up in preparing your garden for perennial planting.

I bought this book hoping to find information for my region 3 garden. I found the best perennial book i have read in a long time. Doug concentrates the content of this book on the information we all want to know, such as plant selection and soil type, while also providing many time and money saving hints that the garden centers don't want you to know. All in all a great informative read. I will buy again from this author.
