Schools teach that art comes from "intuition" and it simply flows from us. If a child isn't showing any artistic instincts from the get go, he never will. Peter doesn't deny the existence of artistically gifted individuals, but he believes drawing should be taught analytically as a skill. Instead of using the historically great artists as absolute models, our learning should start from the basics and evolve step-by-step at one's individual pace. This is a one of a kind drawing book. I have many books on drawing and this one has helped me step by step to develop and improve my drawing skills. I think it's especially important for people who believe that drawing is an innate talent which not everyone can possess. I've learned from this book and also the author's previous guidebook number one that anyone with a desire and willingness to practice the lessons in these two books can become very skilled at drawing. The lessons seem simple but what they do is build a foundation for drawing skills one step at a time. I have even seen some of my friends that are skilled painters improve their foundational skills by following the steps as laid out in these books.
Although I’ve been painting for several years now, I found these books to be very informative.You always want to, as they say “measure twice and cut once†and these books give you the tricks to make those measurements without using a ruler or grid.There is nothing more frustrating then getting halfway into a drawing and find your proportions for the drawing are wrong and you have to spend time making corrections.Using the techniques in Peters books give you the ability to do that “measure twice†before you start the final drawing.
This book is instructive in detail and really teaches how to draw and evaluate what you are trying to do. Very good for a less experienced and patient artist.
Peter Kraus has done a wonderful job breaking down drawing any subject into easy steps. If you are a beginner, start with guidebook 1 and then move on to guidebook 2.
I am taking a class form the author and tis book really helps to explain the concepts.
The title says any one can draw and they are right. I could not draw anything and now I can.
Wife loves to drawing and this book is really helpful in learning the basics.
Step by step lessons, easy to follow and makes it easy to learn how to draw properly. Will certainly permit me to improve the quality of my paintings and I'm enjoying the process as well.
